You ask three makeup artists for a bridal quote and get three very different numbers. Usually that is not because one is overcharging. It is because each package includes different things. Once you know what to look for, comparing quotes becomes much easier.
What a basic bridal package usually includes
- Skin prep: Cleansing, moisturising and priming before the base.
- Base makeup: Foundation, concealer, contour, blush and highlighter, using the method you agreed (traditional, HD or airbrush).
- Eye makeup: Eyeshadow, liner, kajal and mascara.
- False lashes: Often included, though premium lashes may cost extra.
- Lips: Lip liner and lipstick, sometimes with a touch-up shade for you to keep.
- Setting: Powder and setting spray so the look lasts.
Some artists include hair styling and saree or dupatta draping in the base price. Many do not. This is the single biggest reason quotes differ.
Common add-ons
Hair styling
Buns, braids, curls and open hairstyles. Elaborate styles with fresh flowers or accessories can cost more than a simple bun.
Hair extensions and accessories
Extensions for volume or length, and hair accessories, are often charged separately or need to be bought by you.
Draping
Saree draping, dupatta setting and pinning the lehenga dupatta in place. A good draper makes a big difference to how your outfit sits in photos.
Trial session
Some artists include a trial; others charge for it and adjust the amount against your final bill if you book.
Travel and stay
If the venue is outside the artist's city, expect to cover travel, and possibly accommodation and meals. Destination weddings can add a considerable amount.
Early-morning or late-night calls
A muhurat at 5 a.m. may mean the artist starts at 2 a.m. Many charge extra for very early or very late starts.
Family and bridesmaid makeup
Makeup for the mother of the bride, sisters, cousins and bridesmaids is usually priced per person, often by the artist's assistants.
Touch-up artist
An assistant who stays with you through the ceremony or reception to fix sweat, tears and lipstick. Highly recommended for long functions.
Multiple functions
Engagement, mehndi, sangeet, wedding and reception are each a separate look. Some artists offer a discount for booking several functions together.
Senior artist or assistant?
Many well-known artists run a team. A package with the lead artist personally doing your makeup will cost more than one handled by a senior team member. Neither is wrong, but you should know which one you are booking, and see examples of that person's own work.
What affects the price
- The artist's experience, reputation and demand
- The method and product brands (airbrush and premium international brands cost more)
- Your city, and whether the date falls in peak wedding season
- How many looks and people are included
- Travel distance and timings
Questions to ask before you book
- Does the price include hair, draping and lashes?
- Will you do my makeup personally, or a member of your team?
- Is the trial included, charged separately, or adjusted against the final bill?
- Are travel, stay and early-morning charges included?
- How much is the advance, and what is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?
- How long will you need, and what time will you arrive?
- Do you provide a touch-up kit or touch-up artist?
Get it in writing
Once you agree on a package, ask for a written confirmation listing every service, the date and timings, the venue address, the total amount, the advance paid and the balance due. A short message or invoice is enough. It protects both of you and avoids awkward conversations on the wedding morning.
