The engagement or ring ceremony is often the first function of your wedding, and the first time many guests see you as a bride-to-be. It is also a chance to try a look you would not wear on the wedding day itself. Most brides go lighter and fresher than their bridal makeup, while still looking clearly dressed up.

1. The fresh, dewy look

Glowing skin, a light base, brushed-up brows, a wash of peach or pink on the cheeks and a tinted lip balm or nude gloss.

  • Best for: Daytime ceremonies, intimate home functions and brides who don't usually wear much makeup.
  • Pairs well with: Pastel lehengas, organza sarees and floral jewellery.
  • Tip: Ask for a skin-like foundation with a cream highlighter on the high points of the face rather than a powder shimmer.

2. Soft glam

A flawless but natural base, warm brown or champagne eyes, soft winged liner, wispy lashes and a rosy or mauve lip.

  • Best for: Evening engagements, banquet halls and hotel functions.
  • Pairs well with: Jewel-toned or metallic outfits.
  • Tip: This is the most photogenic engagement look, and the safest choice if you are unsure.

3. Pastel eyes

A touch of colour on the lids, such as lilac, mint, powder blue or blush pink, picked from your outfit, with a neutral face and soft lips.

  • Best for: Brides who want something playful and modern.
  • Pairs well with: Pastel and ivory outfits with matching accents.
  • Tip: Keep the rest of the face simple so the colour looks deliberate.

4. Classic kohl and nude lips

Smudged kajal or a defined lower lash line, softly contoured skin and a nude-brown lip.

  • Best for: Brides who love a traditional Indian eye, and outfits with heavy embroidery or jewellery.
  • Pairs well with: Silk sarees, temple jewellery and polki.
  • Tip: Choose a smudge-proof kajal and ask your artist to set it with a matching powder shadow so it lasts.

5. The statement lip

Minimal eyes with a bold lip: a classic red, berry, wine or coral.

  • Best for: Evening functions and confident, simple outfits.
  • Pairs well with: Solid-coloured outfits, black, white or gold.
  • Tip: Use a long-wear or transfer-resistant formula. You will be greeting a lot of people.

Matching your makeup to your outfit

  • Pastels and ivory: Soft pinks, peaches and champagne tones.
  • Jewel tones (emerald, sapphire, wine): Warm bronze or gold eyes and a deeper lip.
  • Red and pink: Keep the lip and outfit from competing; choose one to lead.
  • Metallics and sequins: Skip heavy shimmer on the face, or it will look busy.

Day vs evening

Daylight shows everything, so a lighter base and softer colours look best. Evening lighting is warmer and dimmer, so you can go a little bolder with the eyes and contour, and add more highlighter.

Don't forget the ring

All eyes, and all cameras, will be on your hands. Book a manicure two or three days before, choose a nail colour that suits your outfit (nudes and soft pinks never date), and moisturise your hands on the morning of the ceremony.

Use it as a trial run

If you are booking the same artist for your wedding, the engagement is a great chance to see how their work looks in photos, how long it lasts and how comfortable you feel with them. Many artists offer a combined engagement and wedding package.
