How to Choose a Wedding Photographer: 10 Questions to Ask Before You Book

Your photos are the one part of the wedding you keep forever. These ten questions help you look past a polished Instagram feed and find a photographer whose work, style and way of working actually suit you.

The food will be eaten, the flowers will wilt and the outfits will go back in the cupboard. The photos stay. That makes your photographer one of the most important bookings you will make, and one of the hardest to judge, because every portfolio online shows only the best twenty frames from hundreds of weddings.

These ten questions help you see what you will actually get.

1. Can I see two or three complete weddings?

A highlight reel shows what a photographer can do on a good day. A full gallery shows what they do on an ordinary one: the family portraits, the dimly lit hall, the rituals that happen fast. Ask for complete galleries, ideally from weddings similar to yours in size, venue type and community.

2. What is your style, in your own words?

Candid, traditional, documentary, editorial, fine-art: every photographer uses these words differently. Ask them to describe their style, then check it matches the galleries. If you love warm, natural colours, a photographer known for dark, moody edits may not be the right fit, however talented they are.

3. Who will actually shoot my wedding?

Many studios have several photographers. Make sure the person whose work you fell in love with is the one turning up, or that you have seen the work of whoever will. Get the name in your booking confirmation.

4. How many people will be on the team?

Ask how many photographers and videographers will be there for each function, and who covers what. For larger Indian weddings, with getting-ready shots on both sides and hundreds of guests, one person is rarely enough.

5. What exactly is included in the package?

  • Number of functions and hours of coverage
  • Edited photos: roughly how many, and in what resolution
  • Albums: how many, how many pages, and who chooses the photos
  • Video: highlight film, full-length film, or both
  • Extras such as drone coverage, a pre-wedding shoot or same-day edits

6. When will we receive the photos and videos?

Delivery times vary widely, from a few weeks to several months for albums and films during peak season. Ask for a realistic timeline in writing, and whether you will get a small set of previews sooner.

7. How do you handle low light and indoor venues?

Many ceremonies happen in halls, temples and evening venues with tricky lighting. Ask how they deal with it and look for examples from similar venues in their galleries. This separates experienced wedding photographers from those who mostly shoot outdoors.

8. Have you worked at our venue, or with our traditions?

A photographer who knows your rituals knows when to be in position: the thali tying, the kanyadaan, the ring exchange, the moment the bride enters. If they haven't shot your type of ceremony before, ask how they prepare, and share a run-of-show with key moments.

9. What do you need from us on the day?

Good photographers will ask for a schedule, a list of must-have family groupings and a contact person who knows the relatives. If they don't ask, that's worth noting.

10. What are your payment, cancellation and backup terms?

  • How much is the advance, and when is the balance due?
  • What happens if the date moves or the photographer falls ill?
  • Do they shoot on cameras with two memory cards, and keep backups of your files?
  • How long do they store your photos after delivery?

Signs you have found the right photographer

  • You like their full galleries, not just their highlights.
  • They ask you questions about your wedding, not just your budget.
  • You feel comfortable around them. You will spend more time with your photographer than with almost anyone else on the day.
  • Everything you agreed is written down.
